Photo negatives back in the day were used to develope pictures or to make copies. There is no way that a picture represents reality if you compromise.
Hard to explain; but if you compromise a negative with the resultant picture you get a skewed picture that may be interesting, but is not an accurate image.
Maybe it is a good thing that todays electronic cameras don't produce a negative first.
